Kentucky: Black Mountain

Kentucky is one of the more remote high points in the east, rising to 4,145ft (ranked the 27th highest state high point). In fact, the road to the summit is more frequently used as an active mining road than for tourists. Route 160 has a speed limit of 55mph, but is flanked by rock walls and steep drop offs. On our trip, an uneventful drive changed quickly when we reached the base of the mountain to find a speed limit of 55 and an anxious semi-truck behind us. About one-third of the way up the winding road, the semi-passed us over a double-yellow line and proceeded to leave us behind in his diesel exhaust.

FAA RADOME

Taking the left at the FAA sign, we drove over the pot-hole marked gravel road past the RADOME and pulled up to the bottom of the abandoned fire tower. A scant 10ft walk and we were at KY's highest point.

While the state took ownership of this spot, the tower is still not climbable.

Gear Recommendations:
This is another drive-up high point. When we visited, we literally drove to the bottom of the tower and stepped out onto the highest ground in the state of Kentucky. As on our summit day, it can get rainy and very muddy near the summit, so foul weather gear and boots are highly recommended. It is fairly remote and cell reception can be spotty, so be prepared with maps/info before you get on the mountain.
