Off the beaten path: Echo Bridge

After exploring the Upton Chamber (see Off the Beaten Path: Upton Chamber), we traveled to Norton, MA to experience the famous Echo Bridge. Built between 1875 and 1877, at the time of construction Echo Bridge was the second longest masonry arch (500ft / 150m) in the country.

Approaches to the bridge are available on either side, although if you visit from the park on the south side, you must cross the busy Ellis St. and climb seemingly endless stairs on your way to the echo platform beneath the north end.

View of the top of the bridge. Note the steep crest that helps keep snow from building up on the walkway.

Echo Bridge spans the Charles River (which also courses through downtown Boston) and resides next to an aquaduct with water falls and is guarded on either side by numerous hemlock trees.
