Tennessee sports the third-highest peak east of the Mississippi River (1st and 2nd place belong to North Carolina). Clingman's Dome stands at an impressive 6,643ft and is capped with a paved observation deck (built in 1959 as part of Mission 66, a National Park Service initiative to expand visitor services).
We visited Clingman's dome on December 24th, 2012 and found the access road (Clingman's Dome Road) from Newfound Gap closed. Not to be deterred, we decided to start the 16mi round-trip hike and bag the TN high point. See more about our journey here.
If the road is open, you can drive almost to the top, with a short, 0.5mi easy trail to the observation tower. There is a visitor center (open in the spring and summer) with bathrooms and souvenirs.

Gear Recommendations:
If you hike in warm weather, be sure to wear comfortable boots if you hike from Newfound Gap. It does get cold, windy, snowy, rainy, etc. at the top, so be sure to check the weather before you set out.
